I Woke Up

I woke up to sunshine,
light dancing in my room,
and birds outside the window,
singing an asynchronous tune.
I woke up to pitter-patter,
footsteps, above my head
with a fresh appreciation
for the lively neighbor kids.
I woke up to the sound of traffic,
rumblings on the highway,
but this morning it added
to the sound of the new day.
I woke up in my home with
freedom to do what I please.
I can lie in bed a little longer
or start the day's activities.
I woke up with all of my faculties
and well-rested, peaceful mind.
I have no gripes this morning;
I am just grateful to be alive.
